468 PIXEL
The 468 Pixel installation was created for the media art festival INSTANDSETZUNG, held in a former slaughterhouse in Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany. The complex had been abandoned for over 20 years.
For the installation, one of the complex’s main buildings was covered with 468 acrylic panels (Pixels), reused from the SkypeLab 1000 Pixel installation created in 2020.
To complete the work, a grid made of strings and acrylic panels was used as a “revetment” for the crumbling walls of the old building. By draping this grid over the entire façade, the intention was to adapt to the architecture by enveloping the structure in a vivid digital veil. The shine and vivid colors of the Pixels contrasted sharply with the decaying walls, acting like a photo filter. Together, they created a striking visual interplay that formed a new, cohesive whole.
This revetment, or cladding, was seen both as an architectural layer disguising the old façade and as a metaphorical mask—a symbol that gained popularity during the pandemic.
As intended, the old slaughterhouse complex was demolished shortly after the festival ended. The installation was also destroyed along with the building, symbolizing the conclusion of a process and the end of the SkypeLab project. The remaining Pixel fragments were collected on-site after the demolition.
